What is the difference between a truck chassis and a truck body?

A commercial truck consists of two major components: the chassis and the truck body.

The chassis is manufactured by companies such as Ford, Freightliner, International, Isuzu, Chevrolet, GMC, Hino, Mack, or Peterbilt. It includes the engine, transmission, frame rails, suspension, axles, wheels, brakes, steering system, electrical systems, and driver’s cab.

The truck body is installed after the chassis is built and determines how the vehicle performs its specific job. Examples include dry freight bodies, refrigerated bodies, platform bodies, stake bodies, dump bodies, service bodies, and parcel delivery bodies.

Truck body manufacturers engineer each body to integrate with the selected chassis while maintaining proper weight distribution, structural integrity, and operational performance. Selecting compatible body and chassis combinations helps maximize payload, safety, and long-term reliability.
